Norris denied home hero Max Verstappen a perfect Friday by lapping 0.023 faster than the championship-leading Red Bull driver in the day's second session at Zandvoort. Norris then lapped in 1:11.330 in the late afternoon, with double Formula One world champion Verstappen second. The 25-year-old leads Mexican team mate Sergio Perez by 125 points after 12 of 22 races. Verstappen fastest in chaotic Baku practice
  + stars: | 2023-04-28 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
April 28 (Reuters) - Red Bull's Formula One leader Max Verstappen put in the fastest time right at the chequered flag on Friday in a chaotic sole practice for the new format Azerbaijan Grand Prix sprint weekend. The double world champion, last year's winner in Baku, lapped the fast street circuit with a best time of one minute 42.315 seconds with his final effort on the soft tyres. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who has never won in Baku but will be chasing his third successive pole in Azerbaijan in later qualifying for Sunday's grand prix, was second on the timesheets. The Monegasque ended up 0.037 seconds slower, after going top in the dying seconds, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez third and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz fourth. Perez has the best record of any driver on the starting grid in Baku with a victory in 2021, second last year and two third places.
F1 braced for chaos as sprint season starts in Baku
  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
April 26 (Reuters) - Formula One is braced for chaos on the streets of Baku this weekend as Azerbaijan hosts the first sprint race of the season and kicks off a run of five grands prix in six weeks. "It’s absolutely ludicrous to be doing the first sprint race of the year in a street race like Azerbaijan," Red Bull boss Christian Horner told reporters at the previous race in Australia. Verstappen won last year. "We are bringing a new floor to Baku amongst some other aerodynamic and mechanical items," said Alpine technical director Matt Harman. "We then have a further development at the following race in Miami and something further for Imola after that."
LONDON, April 20 (Reuters) - Half the Formula One calendar could be turned into sprint weekends if changes to the format are given the go-ahead and prove a hit in Baku next week, according to Haas team boss Guenther Steiner. MotoGP has already turned its whole calendar into two-race weekends, with a sprint on Saturday and the main event on Sunday. "I don’t know if we will do it every race weekend. But the F1 promoter will know what to do," Steiner told Reuters in an interview through team sponsor MoneyGram. Steiner said there would still be a need for some race weekends with three practice sessions and just a Sunday grand prix but the current Saturday sprint format needed changing.
Haas F1 boss Steiner plays it by the book
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, April 20 (Reuters) - Haas boss Guenther Steiner has famously not watched the Netflix 'Drive to Survive' docu-series that made him a cult hero for a new wave of Formula One fans, but he has read every word of 'Surviving to Drive'. If they feel happy, I’m happy for them," said Steiner. He came back in 2005 when Red Bull bought the Jaguar team but then moved to NASCAR, returning to F1 when Haas debuted in 2016. RARE EXAMPLEThe book is a rare example of an active F1 boss putting his thoughts into print, however forthright and uncomplimentary. Ralf Schumacher, brother of seven times world champion Michael and uncle of Haas's dropped former driver Mick, is unlikely to enjoy it.
Long April break gives F1 time to take stock
  + stars: | 2023-04-03 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, April 3 (Reuters) - Formula One teams will welcome more than their drivers the breathing space provided by a long April break in a record 23-race season. "I don't want to have that break, because you know which race was missing from that break," said Alfa Romeo's Guanyu Zhou, the sport's only Chinese driver. "You will use it (the break) just to prepare for the next race in a better way and review the first three races. "For the race team, there's an opportunity to have a little bit of rest because the rest of the season will be tough." The break provides more time also for teams to work on upgrades and add spares after a bruising weekend for some in Australia.
MANAMA, March 2 (Reuters) - Mick Schumacher's Formula One struggles last season feature strongly in the latest run of 'Drive to Survive' but the German says he feels no need to watch the Netflix docu-series. "I didn't watch it...that's a personal choice," Schumacher told Reuters when asked about the series at a 75th anniversary event for sportswear maker Puma at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. "I just don't necessarily feel the need to watch myself on TV, I guess." Schumacher muses separately, in a frank scene on a Swiss mountainside, about the difficulties he faces and his determination to succeed. With the retirement of four times world champion Sebastian Vettel, the only German driver is veteran Nico Hulkenberg as Schumacher's replacement at Haas.
F1 team bosses have their own light-bulb moment
  + stars: | 2023-02-26 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The late McLaren boss Teddy Mayer liked to compare Formula One drivers to interchangeable light-bulbs, declaring "you plug them in and they do the job", and nowadays the same might be said for team principals. The Frenchman is on his third different team, after stints at Sauber and Renault. "It shows also that the role of the team principal is maybe sometimes also a bit over-rated because if you can change it so quickly and there is no big impact, it tells also something. Sauber, with Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing as chairman of the board, will become the Audi works team from 2026. "But other than that we must not forget that F1 teams have developed into big organisations where the owners are not any more the team principals... some have engineers as team principals, some have more an old-fashioned rule."
That's just how F1 is, says Hulkenberg on Schumacher's exit
  + stars: | 2022-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Nov 21 (Reuters) - Germany's Nico Hulkenberg showed little sympathy on Monday for Mick Schumacher after replacing his younger compatriot at the Haas Formula One team next season. "That’s just how F1 is and ultimately the driver, when he’s racing, he has to convince the team with performance. Le Mans 24 Hours winner Hulkenberg has started 181 races but last raced full-time in Formula One in 2019 with Renault, now Alpine. Hulkenberg said the desire to get back on the grid had returned this season and he contacted Haas team boss Guenther Steiner. Times have moved on, both drivers now have young daughters and Hulkenberg said he expected a good relationship.
Haas to announce Mick Schumacher's F1 fate next week
  + stars: | 2022-11-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
SAO PAULO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Haas will announce next week whether Mick Schumacher is staying or going, the Formula One team's boss Guenther Steiner said on Saturday. The German's predicament was not helped by qualifying for Saturday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix sprint race when he ended up last while team mate Kevin Magnussen took a surprise pole position. "Expect the announcement some time next week," Steiner told reporters, amid increasing speculation the team's decision has been made. It will be coming next week," said Steiner. The first two runs were very good but then with the dry tyres he just couldn't get the feeling," he said.
Magnussen's stunning pole is soup for Steiner

Nov 11 (Reuters) - Haas team boss Guenther Steiner savoured a rare moment of success as his Formula One backmarkers pulled off an astonishing first pole position with Kevin Magnussen at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Friday. "When it rains soup, you need to have a spoon ready," the Italian told Sky Sports television. Last year, with Schumacher and Magnussen's now-departed Russian predecessor Nikita Mazepin, Haas failed to score a point all season and ended last. "You will always have nay-sayers but welcome to our pole position, nay-sayers," said Steiner in response to those who questioned what his men could achieve. It was starting to rain so that was the crucial part today, just getting that best track for me.
NO KIDDING"You're kidding," Magnussen had said over the team radio when told he was fastest as the red flags were waved. Saturday will be the third such race of the season, with Verstappen winning the two previous ones at Imola and in Austria. Seven-times world champion Hamilton suffered as a result of his team mate's spin and will start the sprint from eighth place. "I will speak to the team and understand what we can do better in those conditions," he said. "I accepted the decision to go on the inters and then I waited for the rain that never came."
